Turn Your School Round By Jenny Mosley £22.95

This well-established best-selling book gives you a clear picture of the Quality Circle Time approach, with emphasis on the need for this to be a Whole School Policy. Clear illustrated sections give guidelines for the management team and for involving staff groups and parents. "Turn Your School Round" is as relevant today as it was when it was first published and has had a huge impact on schools. I think most of us 'hardy' head teachers have a well-thumbed copy, as it promotes the idea of circle time for everyone, staff, parents, midday supervisors and, of course, children" - Fizz Starkey, Headteacher, Motcombe School, East Sussex Examples from schools using Jenny’s approach bring the ideas to life and A4 photocopiable pages make light work of handouts for a range of circle meetings for adults and pupils. A really practical, useful book. (LDA)

  • I requested this book from my local library after hearing a radio interview with the author and I was so impressed. Some aspects of this guide could be useful to anyone wanting to promote positive attitude through improved self-esteem, although it is especially relevant to primary teacher and midday staff, and of interest to Governors and parent-helpers. The assumption that staff who feel better within and about themselves are better able to spport colleagues and pupils calmly and constructively is just as relevant to parents. Jenny explains how the deceptively simple device of sitting in a circle allows everyone to make a contribution to a discussion or problem-solving session, in a climate of acceptance rather than criticism. In the staffroom, the emphasis in circle-time at first is on promoting supportive relationships among teachers, then recognising the effects of negative labelling and how it contributes to a vicious cycle, in which a child labelled 'difficult' or 'naughty' is beset also by a poor self-image, low expectations and deteriorating skills. Positive feedback, noticing and reinforcing desire behaviour by susing specific and positive language may enable the vicious circle to be turned around into a positive one. The presentation of ideas and examples is beautifully clear and includes photocopiable handouts and suggested topics for circle-time sessions.
