In every class there is a need to address how children behave and react to others in a range of situation. Jane Asher has written a series of books which look at a range of emotions such as being happy, sad, angry and calm through the ups and downs of Moppy, a lovable creature from outer space who interacts with a family and particularly David an only child. Colour is used to show Moppy’s personal feelings in a range of everyday situations. Scarfe’s illustrations are vivid and full of life, clearly showing emotion. These books would provide an excellent basis for class discussion or for working with children individually, who find it difficult to express or control their emotions. Colour as a medium for self-expression may help children who have literacy or language difficulties. The books could also pave the way for the setting of individual or class targets by looking at behavioural and emotional issues in an anonymous and often humorous way. For busy teachers, these books provide a useful resource for addressing behavioural and emotional issues and would soon become a favourite in an upper Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 class library.
