The Health Promoting School approach, in parallel with the Whole School Quality Circle Time (WSQCT) approach, attempts to shape the whole school context, including the school’s ethos, organisation, management structures, relationships and physical environment, as well as the taught curriculum, so that the total experience of school life is conducive to the health of all who learn and work there. The 12 World Health Organisation (WHO) ‘criteria for a healthy school’ start with three which are directly linked with mental, emotional and social health, and which are promoted by the WCQCT Model – i.e. ‘the active promotion of self esteem of all pupils’, ‘the development of good relations’, and ‘the clarification of the social aims of the school’.
