Quality Circle Time is a success in India

Sun, Nov 21st 2004

In 2004, Jenny Mosley’s latest trip to India was both rewarding and stimulating. Working with educationalists and children, Jenny provided training and worked on special project with her friends and colleagues there.

We are delighted that The Teacher Foundation in Bangalore has now published "A Handbook of Quality Circle Time In India" (published by the Teacher Storehouse, Bangalore, 2004).

In her foreword, Jenny relives the reasons for her design of the Quality Circle Time Model. “The Model,” writes Jenny, “reflects the needs of contemporary society. Using a step-by-step approach, behaviours and skills are taught carefully and cheerfully. Children learn to value themselves, care for one another, and to co-operate and interact in ways that increase everyone’s sense of being in an emotionally safe place, where they can grow and thrive and take risks which could lead to excellence in their fields.”

Several different teachers have contributed lesson plans and schemes of work for this thoughtful book, full of bright ideas. The comments below from teachers using the model and contributing to the book provide a wonderful insight into their inspirational visions for teaching the children in their classes.

“My students were clamouring for a circle time session after the first term examinations. A few students had not fared well, and wanted to discuss the paper. The session really helped them as they got valuable tips from their friends in the class on how to tackle essay type questions and also prepare for the objective section of the paper. They even openly admitted that they had been inattentive and irregular! They were sure that no-one would betray their confidences,” writes a teacher at MES Kishora Kendra, Malleswaram, Bangalore.

Comments from Students

“It helps me to be good and not get angry.”
“It helped me share my thoughts with others.”
“It has created in me a sense of belonging.”
“It encourages self-discipline.”
“We can discuss our problems and learn from our mistakes.”
