Circle Time helps make a positive impact on literacy scores. January 2005

Tue, Feb 22nd 2005

“Literacy, self-esteem and locus of control” is an interesting report written by Alison Galbraith and Joy Alexander. It is about the plight of Year Primary Six children in Northern Ireland (equivalent to Year 5 elsewhere in the UK).

These children were targeted because they found some aspects of literacy challenging. The authors used different methods of intervention, best described as a combination of Circle Time activities, interactive teaching methods and discussion based on the principles of Solution Focused Brief Therapy.

The results indicated a positive response to the support they were given, as children’s reading scores improved significantly, while many children’s self-esteem and locus of control scores also rose at the same time.

One of the recommendations arising from this research is that Circle Time should become a normal classroom activity to be used alongside other methods to enhance self-esteem, so that this becomes part of the classroom ethos.
