Command Your Troops - an article about discipline in schools

Wed, Jun 3rd 2009

(Notes from an article in the TES Magazine 22.05.09)

Sir Alan Steer, Government adviser, wrote a recent report on school behaviour which showed that there is no room for complacency in tackling discipline in schools. “This means getting in early, on the front foot, tackling low-level behaviour before it gets worse,” he said. The article in the TES discusses how different people cope with maintaining discipline.

Robert Birch, winner of a teaching award in 2008, warns that when you are new children often know this and make you an easy target for poor behaviour. He says that teachers must demonstrate good practice if they want to build authority. He also says:

Make sure you refer to your whole-school behaviour policy, which will help frame your own strategies for dealing with discipline issues." A proactive approach can work best, believes Mr Birch. “Offering rewards and incentives for positive behaviour can go a long way,” he says.

Mr Bennet, Head of Religious Studies at Raine’s Foundation School in London adds, “The most important thing is to act early and with conviction, says Mr Bennet. “Always be fair. Always follow up,” he says. As soon as they know you will never let them off – they’ll give up.”
