Glasgow City Council fights discrimination and prejudice using the 5-Step QCT model for schools

Tue, May 20th 2008

Glasgow City Council, in conjunction with staff from Glendale primary school, has developed an anti-racist pack to support their pledge to “fight discrimination and encourage a vibrant multicultural Glasgow". It has now been promoted by the Scottish Executive to all Scottish schools.

The pack is considered to be a powerful and appropriate teaching tool for use within an anti-racist approach. The work is based on Jenny Mosley’s five-step Quality Circle Time model, and was developed by a team including one of Jenny’s trained trainers after attending a Train the Trainers course and after initiating pilot work in this area.

Jenny Mosley’s Quality Circle Time model was considered the most effective model for this programme because it “interweaves a positive behaviour management system with the process of personal and social education.” It was also the model of choice because the approach provides an ideal group listening system for enhancing children’s self-esteem, promoting moral value, building a sense of being part of a team and developing social skills within a democratic forum. In this instance, “the circle time approach could provide young people with opportunities to:

  • Reflect upon emotional experiences
  • Understand the experiences of others
  • Experience connection to the wider society
  • Make personal decisions based on these understandings.”

(Glasgow City Council)

“Circle Time develops a whole range of personal and social skills making a valuable contribution to the Personal and Social development of young people. All the qualities of Circle Time would contribute to the mental, emotional and spiritual health of participating pupils in a safe, secure atmosphere where there is fun as those taking part enjoy the games, stories and celebrations of success which are all important elements of the circle.” Glasgow City Council

The pack consists of a series of circle time session plans for different primary year groups and an interactive DVD to support the resource.
