Intergenerational circle time "Building Bridges" project in Leeds wins award

Mon, Feb 11th 2008

In November 2007, Leeds won the Eurocities award for innovation for their intergenerational 'Building Bridges' project in Gdansk, Poland. The judges commented that this project, in a simple and transferable way, addresses an issue which "every city in Europe has to deal with". The book "Intergenerational Circle Time Building Bridges at Key Stage 2" was written by Penny Vine. This book was inspired by the belief that many children have little direct contact with older people, while older people's view of children is often shaped by the media, where they are stereotyped as out-of-contol, rude or frightening. A bridge was needed between the generations so they could discover the gap was not really so wide. Penny vine, who has been an inspirational Quality Circle Time practitioner for many years, used the approach to set up the pilot project in Leeds. This book distills the lessons and insights learned from that work and offers practical ideas, advice and guidlines for others to set up their own successful projects. The Building Bridges toolkit for intergenerational Circle Time has been successful in primary schools for four years.
