Jenny Mosley Trains Teachers in Powys, Wales

Tue, May 4th 2010

Yan James, School Improvement Officer invited Jenny to work with approximately 100 teachers on the theme of how to develop emotionally intelligent schools, thereby promoting the wellbeing of all children and adults within them.

On the morning of March 12th 2010, Jenny presented her golden model – the Whole School Quality Circle Time – as an approach that raises the self esteem of all adults and children, sets us safe listening systems, embeds the golden values through clear rewards and sanctions, and creates happier and calmer lunchtimes – and then gave a lot of extra ideas to support children ‘beyond’ the normal motivational strategies.

In the afternoon, she worked with a large class of untutored pupils to demonstrate how circle time is a vibrant, pacey, and positive approach which all teachers, with a little bit of training, can use in their own classrooms.

Jenny’s model for helping staff stay energetic has been included in the excellent Welsh Assembly’s ‘Staff Health & Wellbeing’ booklet (written by Wrexham Health & Wellbeing Dept of the County Borough Council) distributed to all schools in Wales. The Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘School Effectiveness Framework’ (2008) reminds all schools that “programmes that help children and young people in their emotional development can have a significant impact on outcomes” (page 21). Welsh teachers certainly felt Jenny’s model was an excellent programme to be explored as these evaluations show.

An inspirational day – fun and a wealth of practical and useful strategies to energise children. Manon Holt, Ysgol Gynradd Machynlleth

Seeing the fantastic knowledge of skills of Jenny herself while observing the children in session was brilliant. Valerie Hopton, Gungrog Church in Wales School, Welshpool

Jenny is very inspirational and motivating. Lots of interaction and movement instead of just sitting on a chair! Sandra Williams, Llanfihangel Rhydithon primary School.

It is very timely, given that all schools are expected to be working on ‘The Personal and Social Education Framework for Seven to Nineteen Year Olds in Wales’ (2007) which urges them to adopt “an affective, holistic approach to PSE” (page 5), that Powys has taken the Quality Circle Time model to its heart. Maybe, finally QCT will become a familiar option for all Welsh schools.
