Jenny Mosley's New Zealand Conference Tour 2007

Fri, Jul 20th 2007

UK educational consultant, Jenny Mosley, gave a series of seminars and lectures to teachers and principals throughout New Zealand. Jenny Mosley is an internationally acclaimed author, lecturer and speaker whose model of building children’s emotional intelligence through Quality Circle Time (QCT) is sought after worldwide.

Her particular concept of Circle Time, where children and their teacher, sit in a circle and, through a carefully guided programme of traditional games, speaking and listening exercises, puppets, scripts and relaxation activities, build their social and emotional skills – has enjoyed huge success throughout many countries. The UK government has recommended her work to all primary and secondary schools.

Jenny started her tour in Auckland on July 14th, then went on to Hamilton and Rotorua. She is next due in Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill. Her tour will finish on 2nd August back in Auckland. Many New Zealand schools due to their teachers having their OE teaching experience in England, have attended her UK courses, or have worked in schools that have adopted her model. Consequently some schools have already implemented many of her ideas, and both the teachers and the children are very enthusiastic. Her model is simple but profound. The premise is that first you need to build the self esteem, morale and energy of all adults who engage with children, so that they can act as positive role models. Then you introduce weekly Circle Time for every class. The school then implements, depending on their needs, a series of recommendations to help with building values, peer led awards and sanctions, and programmes that can help children teach other children games so that playtimes become truly happy learning experiences for everyone.

Her website www.circle-time.co.uk has lots of ideas and free lesson plans. The evaluations so far from New Zealand teachers have been 100% positive. “Jenny’s work is inspiring – I can’t wait to get back and try out the ideas – I particularly like the fun and the laughter, and the idea that only happy and calm children can learn”, are typical of all the written comments.

The Quality Circle Time model looks all set to brighten up our schools, give every child a ‘voice’, strengthen a sense of community and promote emotional well being for everyone. When asked about how she felt the tour was being received Jenny said “I am really excited about peoples responses, and amazed at how many ideas, already embedded in New Zealand schools, are making a difference. I find New Zealand teachers really like common sense and are prepared to have a go at anything if they think it is going to work. They are inundated with educational initiatives – so they really need to find ways to replenish their energy before they can start initiating new and exciting ideas for children”.

Spectrum Education NZ has supported and promoted Jenny’s lecture tour.
