My Daddy’s Gone Away by Chris MacGregor

Wed, Mar 24th 2010

Jenny Mosley came across this deserving project initiated by a soldier, Chris MacGregor, that helps to support children and families who are faced with periods of time when their father is away for work.

Chris MacGregor, a serving British Army officer of The King's Royal Hussars, spent much time away from his home, wife and two children (aged 3 and 5) on military operations abroad. Chris was naturally missed very much by his family and, although he and his wife both worked very hard and knowledgably to reassure their children and manage their anxieties and upset outbursts, still they all found the periods of absence very testing.

When Chris came home he decided to write something to benefit the children and families of others. Chris had noticed in his colleagues that the soldiers who had said goodbye properly to their families and sorted out their personal affairs before leaving, were much better able to focus upon their work.

There was an obvious need for a children's picture book to help explain that many daddies have to go away to work. A book to also explain that the daddies continue to love their children whilst away and that there are tricks to make the absence easier, and also that daddies do return home too!

So, Chris wrote an inspirational and original children’s book for families – the story being that the father has to leave his children and home temporarily. The story is in the form of a poem, written carefully to embrace all professions as other daddies have to go away too.

Chris has also produced a medium through which parents can explore separation anxiety with their children, offering factual ‘top tips’ for Mums in a fun and open manner, prior to and throughout, a father’s absence.
