Pupils and staff in a Ugandan school benefit from Circle Time

Fri, Nov 2nd 2007

This inspiring letter was received recently from someone whose daughter is working in a school in Uganda:

"Hi,

My name is Mary Dicker and my daughter Ruth was in touch with you. You very kindly sent Circle Time Materials to Uganda where my other daughter Jane has started a primary school in a very needy area of Kampala.

I just wanted to tell you something of what happened there.

I was visiting to do some work with School staff, children and guardians, especially providiing emotional support and teaching on emotional literacy.

During the staff training (which took place over a week), my daughter wanted me to teach them a little about Circle Time. I am no expert, but we used the 5 step model and did Circle Time. The staff loved it. The fruit game became Jackfruit and Mango! The Magic Carpet visualisation was an enormous hit, and they all wished they could buy a Magic Carpet! All the staff were included, volunteers, guard, cook, cleaner.

The cook who always kept herself to the edge of the group duing the week's training said the Circle Time gave her an opportunity to be a central part of the circle and recognise she had something important to share. The school are now going to include Circle Time in their weekly programme, which will be of great benefit to the children who have suffered so much emotionally.

The other amazing thing, was that the books arrived the night before I was teaching about Circle Time. When I told the staff about your generosity, they burst into rapturous applause.

Thank you so much.

With good wishes, Mary Dicker."
