Role Models for Model Citizens – article in the Guardian October 7th 2008

Fri, Nov 14th 2008

This article discusses how schools are teaching emotional wellbeing and whether this ensures today’s children will be socially and morally equipped for the world. The concept has raised in profile over the last few years, not least with the introduction of the government’s SEAL programme (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) Also discussed are some different programmes that foster emotional development and well-being. The article states that Jenny Mosley’s circle time and circles of support are most prominent amongst these methods.

“Today, many programmes foster emotional development and wellbeing, with circle time the most prominent in UK primary schools. It was devised by Jenny Mosley some 15 years ago to foster community and give children an opportunity to reflect on their feelings and those of others. Her more intensive “circles of support” were designed for those with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties to help give them a feeling of control over their behaviour and actions and a better self-image”

The article also discusses “values education” which was pioneered by a headteacher called Neil Hawkes in an Oxfordshire primary school in the early 1990s. It revolves around a set of 22 values, such as respect, cooperation, responsibility, tolerance and courage. These 22 values are introduced to pupils over a two-year cycle.
