School nurses and Circle Time case study
Wed, Oct 12th 2005
School nurses used Circle Time to bring important health messages to children. This project is just one example of how circle time can be effectively used and adapted for many different issues facing practitioners.
A dynamic team came together to initiate this project:
· Ayrshire & Arran School Nursing Service
· Jenny Mosley Consultancies
· East Ayrshire Education Services
The aim was to bring health messages to children and young people in a way that was open and clear. Circle Time was felt to be an ideal forum for talking with children and young people about sexual health and puberty. To start with, public health nurses went on Jenny Mosley's Circle Time Train the Trainers courses. After this, all school nurses in Ayrshire learnt how to take Circle Times so they could use this for addressing groups of young people.
The school nurses used this method initially in their sexual health and puberty talks, enabling them to work in a more holistic way when discussing sensitive issues, using a process that promotes emotional safety for the young people.
