Scotts, Batman and Danny the READ dogs!

Tue, Dec 8th 2009

At Jenny Mosley Consultancies we are privileged to be able to hear all about amazing project that help and support children and teachers. The following is one of these fantastic projects that Jenny was so impressed by, she has donated some puppets and puppet books to support the work being carried out.

Tony Nevett contacted Jenny. Tony has a READ (Reading Education Assistance Dog) named Scotts. Scotts goes into schools, libraries and to classes for children with special educational needs and he sits with children so that they can read to him. Scotts was the first READ dog in the UK, followed by a greyhound named Batman. The project, like most, started small but has really taken off with great PR interest including radio, television, newspapers and magazines.

Recently Tony and his colleagues rescued a greyhound puppy called Danny. Danny – see the picture attached to see how gorgeous he is - is training to become a READ dog. All this work is carried out on a voluntary basis and the costs of training Danny are high – at about £750. Danny will be working in schools particularly with children who have special educational needs.

Tony Nevett is a retired Greyhound Trust volunteer and he has now been honoured by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain for his work in launching this READ dog scheme.

Tony, from Northamptonshire, said to the Greyhound Board: “The READ programme was set up in the US and I am trying to bring it to life in the UK. Many children find it a struggle to read and it really knocks their confidence if they stumble over words in front of their mates. The idea of reading to dogs is that they don’t answer back and they don’t give you a hard time if you don’t get it right first time. It gives children an audience to practice in front of and helps them to build their confidence and their ability.

Jenny Mosley and her team are delighted to be able to contribute to this marvellous project and everyone looks forward to hearing about their future successes. Most of all, best of luck to Danny in his new role!
