The Peckham ‘CLAN’ hold a Jenny Mosley training day to remember!
Thu, Nov 5th 2009
400 teachers, TA’s and learning mentors get together to share the costs of a big fat training day! Peckham Community Learning Network [CLAN] of schools made a big brave decision. They wanted top class training event to bring the schools together with an inspiring and entertaining speaker. They chose Jenny Mosley and her team of senior arts consultants. Mark Parsons, Headteacher of Oliver Goldsmith Primary School and Peckham CLAN Leader, was a driving force behind it, but he also had the benefit of someone who was not in teaching, has excellent organisational skills and whose job it is just to help schools in any way they can. Yolanda Houston worked with Jenny’s conference administrator Joanna Pace and the day was born!!! What a day! They booked the Vinopolis – the huge old wine cellars and conference centre (luckily none of us discovered where the cellars were – but it wasn’t for the lack of trying) it is a massive building underneath a train station. Jenny kicked off the day with a huge input on how to look after your own emotional health and wellbeing, how to be a good team member and how to keep a sense of humour whilst in busy and sometimes stressful school environments. This went down a storm and soon everyone was massaging each others shoulders, singing and clapping.
This was followed by a superb lunch. It may happen in the city a lot but for people in schools it is a huge treat to be given grown up goodies, like smoked salmon, French apple tart and the list went on.
In the afternoon it was the turn of Jenny’s arts consultants to lift the day. Soon Georgia had people with their hands up puppets chatting away, Dave was brewing up a sizzling samba session, Helen had people holding hands, entwined in knots of laughter, Anna-Michelle was ‘SEADing’ lots of fun ideas with the early years practitioners and Peter was dressed in a cap (and a suit!!!) with onions showing how drama can cavort across the curriculum. The evaluations all testified to everyone’s sense of being looked after, inspired and motivated “I can’t wait to get back and jazz up our staff meetings with games”. “I have forgotten that you can’t learn without laughter”. “I feel so positive and valued”. “I must remember to keep respecting individual differences and not judge people”.
This is the list of schools who took part:

“The staff of Oliver Goldsmith, especially support staff, who rarely experience this ‘five star’ Inset and in ‘five star’ surroundings were all lifted by this experience. We know about ‘ambushes’ and ‘dog’s bottoms’ and refer to them regularly. We intend to build on the excellent training we have received to enhance everyone’s wellbeing.
The day was also about the staff of the Peckham schools mixing and working together. And we actually did more: among other exciting activities, we danced, sang and played clapping games together. Hopefully, this will lead to much more co-operation between our schools. We look forward to another fantastic conference next year?...”
