Hi I am a new learning mentor and would like some ideas on teaching organisational skills. Can you help?

Supporting colleagues in their first post is always daunting & time management a hard task for all of us! I'd look at Jenny's books on "Boost Your Energy" & "She who Dares Wins!" as well as Steven Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" for ideas.

Also show your mentee your diary & how YOU use it to plan your time so that you don't waste it. Working out what the priorities are then tackling them with confidence is half the battle-when we are uncertain we tend to spend ages pontificating over a job that actually takes 10 minutes or so! Ask your mentee to observe, chat & "model" several teachers she admires to see how they cope, the form her own plan so the work/life balance is bearable. Sometimes we have to stop & have a break or Golden Moment & visit our Wells or we collapse! A good laugh & de-stress & a belief that we are doing the best we can & that nobody is perfect, can be a huge help.

A book published this year "Better Behaviour through Golden Time" (Mosley and Sonnet ISBN 1 85503 394 1) has a great chapter with organisational checklists. The Chapter is entitled "The classroom where Golden Time thrives". Worth a look!
