How can I reassure parents about Circle Time?

Q:  I've heard from one parent that there's been discussion outside the playground by a few mums, saying they weren't happy about Circle Time as it was too 'nosey'.

A:  Any time feelings are aired, in whatever forum, some people will become anxious or feel threatened. It is very important to defuse any potentially difficult situations in advance, by sending parents a simple newsletter stating the Golden Rules of your class, explaining all the incentive and sanction systems, and including a short paragraph describing how Circle Time is used as a regular means to help children think about moral values, become more confident in their social skills and build their team spirit. A simple newsletter like this should invite parents to discuss any reservations they might have with you. This will demystify the process and avoid any potential trouble. Some schools even issue an open invitation to parents to attend a class Circle Time, while some schools have set up a programme of Circle Time sessions specifically for their parents.
