How do I encourage children to participate in Circle Time?

Q: One or two children often say 'pass' and rarely participate. Any ideas?

A: Some children freeze when they're put on the spot. Don't think that Circle Time always has to be separate from the rest of class life. You can prepare children for Circle-Time discussion or rounds by telling them the themes and asking them in advance to write down their responses on a piece of paper which they can bring to the circle and read. Sometimes you can ask them during Bubble Time what they would like to discuss and occasionally you can include a known interest of a particular child. Encourage them also to use an anonymous suggestion box.
