I am doing a dissertation on Circle Time and can't find anywhere to do my class observations.
Q: I am doing a dissertation on circle time and I had planned on doing some observation of children and their behaviour during a circle time session and observing their behaviour in a normal class setting. I have been asking around to numerous schools to try and carry out this observation, but have been unsuccessful. I was just wondering could advise me of any other way to gather relevant information. I was thinking perhaps some surveys for teachers to fill out.
I am just unsure.
A: I wonder if you have been specifically asked to collect information from
student observations - if so, I should speak to your tutors about this as
you could be marked down for not completing what they asked. You are right to ask around different schools to see if anyone will allow you to do observations. Obviously schools which have an efficient and well-established circle time tradition might be more likely to let you observe sessions.
If you don't need to do direct observations then you could survey teachers
for their opinions as you suggest, coupled with a literature review. There
are many reports on Jenny's website (www.circle-time.co.uk), along with a
questions and answers section and a magazine articles section to look through.
There are a number of survey forms and ideas for surveying in Jenny's book
"They're driving me mad!" although most are not specifically designed for
teachers or for assessing just pupil's self esteem.
