Aberdeen school pupils run a great parents’ meeting with a difference
Kirkhill Primary School in Aberdeen sets a high standard for thinking ‘outside the box’ when it came to a lively and engaging parents’ meeting.
Parents and carers were invited to attend a behaviour meeting not about pupils, but led by pupils. Year six and seven students had worked in pairs to prepare short talks on each of the following subject areas:
· The Golden Rules
· Golden Time
· Loss of Golden Time
· Playground Behaviour
· Pupil Councils
· Pupil Responsibilities
· Circle Time
Parents then had the opportunity to experience Circle Time first hand!
Following their presentations, pupils split the parents into three small circles, each with two pupils in. One pupil took on the role of teacher and led the circle beginning with the skills of Circle Time. This was followed by a game of ‘pass the smile’.
Pupils explained to the parents how to use the ‘talking object’ which was passed round to invite people to give an opinion. The starter sentence used by all the participants was “I think Kirkhill is good at ….”. Parents then learnt one of the pupils’ favourite games before finishing off with an open forum for parents to ask questions about Circle Time.
Everyone involved thought the whole evening was a real success, and a question and answer session was followed by an evaluation of the events. Sixty parents in total attended and some of the evaluation comments are below:
