Circle Time: A Practical Guide. Scottish Borders Council
Abstract
This study is concerned with looking at the potential of regular, weekly sessions of Circle Time in relation to developing the self-esteem, group dynamics and positive behaviour of a class of year four children. This opportunity will enable me to develop my skills as a Circle Time facilitator. I collected data using questionnaires, checklists and observation and analysed the findings according to changes in self-esteem and observed classroom behaviour. The data was collected before and after a series of six Circle Time sessions.
The study concludes that Circle Time does have the potential to increase children’s self-esteem, to unify a class group with common aims and moral values and encourage positive behaviour.
The study recognises the need for a whole school commitment to Circle Time set within a whole school approach to raising self-esteem and the need for staff training in this very valuable area.
