Canal Boat Hire On The Kennet and Avon Canal
All Aboard Nuthatch! A Perfect Break May 2017
Canal boat hire on the Kennet and Avon Canal is easy with Nuthatch! Nuthatch is the perfect way for two, inexperienced narrow boaters, to learn about knots, mooring, locks, swing bridges, turning around and finding beautiful places to stop to eat along the Kennet and Avon Canal.
After a few hours of good tuition, we set off with our little Westie and headed towards Bath. We’d been shown how to use the tiller and avoid other boats, to go through a lock and a swing bridge and how to moor and rope up or walk the plank if needs be! The whole narrowboat experience is so calming and so slow, nothing can be rushed.
At only 35ft long, Nuthatch is very compact, bijou and romantic, she is a very pretty narrowboat. And you certainly have to like each other if you’re sharing the boat! The galley is small, only one person can create meals at any one time but, with plenty of beautiful old pubs and small towns along the way, we often just enjoyed eating out and sampling the local food and ales. Along the way you meet lots of other people on narrowboats and every one is so friendly, you’re all in it together! At the locks you often find one of the Canal enthusiast volunteers there to help and guide you. You do need to read the on board guide through just in case you do end up going through on your own! We had also read the online Boaters Handbook published by the Canal and River Trust and, with the tuition, we found that invaluable. Once you work out the science of how the locks work, they become much easier.
Mooring is a joy, once you’ve learned how to tie those knots, step off at the right time and steer accurately, it becomes a real pleasure. Learning a new skill is always good for you and learning how to steer and moor a narrowboat in this beautiful part of the world is good for the mind, the heart and the soul!
Even our little dog became expert at walking the gangplank!

On our way from Trowbridge to Bath we tackled locks, swing bridges, went through tunnels, across aqueducts. Best of all, we met lots of lovely people who are always willing to help! We also visited beautiful places, enjoyed some great walks and we ate in some fabulous pubs.
Converting the saloon seating into the bed at night is quite a skill. However, once you’ve mastered it, it just becomes another of your little daily routines. Like making sure you shower at the end of the day when the engine has heated up the water. It’s different to being at home with all those creature comforts and that’s what makes it so special. Slow, unrushed and steady away. A complete contrast to the hurly burly of daily working life.
Many thanks to Linda and Nigel Kingdon for this lovely blog!
